Social Networking: Google+ is one of the newest 'social netwoking' sites out there. You can find infomration about many others in the

Social Networking Guide.

For now, the most popular social networking site on the planet is Facebook. I've created a
PUFS TTP Fall 2011 Group here.

In the past, this has been used as a way for TTP participants toshare photos and resources during the program and stay in touchafterward. It's also useful for connected with people you might whilein the U.S. To join, you'll need to create a Facebook account (if you don't already have one), click on the above link. People who are already in the group can add 'friends' to it.
If you'd like to become 'friends' with Jeff, you can do so here by clicking 'Add Friend'.

For information about Twitter, LinkedIn, and other ELT Groups, check out the Social Networking Guide. (optional)

Spend the rest of class doing one or more of the following:

Review assorted skills

Getting Started with Google+

To get started with Google+, click on the +YourName in the upper left of your Gmail Window (or go to plus.google.com)

The first time you use Google+, you'll need to enter information about gender and age. Click Join.

You'll see several screens that ask you about profile information and adding people to circles. You can enter information or ignore and click 'continue' each time.

If you see Jeffrey Lebow at some point, click 'Add to circles'.

Then 'create new circle' and enter 'TTP'.

Now go to Jeffrey Lebow's Profile page

If you see 'Jeffrey Lebow is hanging out", click 'Join this Hangout'.

If you’d like to experiment with Google’s Photo service Picasa, here’s how.
Picasa allows you to create and embed slideshows like this on your blog. Task: post at least 5 photos with short descriptions on your blog (either five in one single post or fives posts with one photo each).

Use Google Reader to subscribe to blogs (your classmates and many others).Download the PUFSTTP-Fall2011.opml here

Comment on your classmates’ blogs. Toward the end of class, use your Google reader to look through you classmates blogs.Task: Make at least two comments.

Task: Edit the 'Resources Page of your blog. Add a link to your Diigo page.

Hot Potatoes & Activity Websites

Go to the Activities Guide and follow instructions.
- Look at Hot Potatoes examples
- Create any kind of Hot Potatoes activity. The activity can be very simple (i.e. a 3 questions quiz, a gap activity with a few blanks, etc.). Look at the Hot Potatoes Guide for help.
- Save the HP activity (Save as & Create webpage) in c:\temp and save a copy on your USB drive. Make sure the file name includes your name and class#.______________________________________________________________

- (Optional) Post a Hot Potatoes Activity on your blog.
- Create a ‘new post’ on your blog.
- Then paste this code into a blog post (make sure to use 'Edit HTML tab, not Compose tab)

- In another tab, upload that the Hot Potatoes html file to JeffLebow.net/ttp-files

(Optional) Use Google Forms or and try to create a basic quiz or survey with at least two questions. Post a link to that quiz (or embed it) in a blog entry on your blogger.com blog.
Explore some of the websites on the Activities Guide which have many, many different kinds of activities. Remember to use Diigo to bookmarks sites you might want to visit again.
HOMEWORK - Bring five digital photos with you to class. Try to choose photos of things that are important to you (people, places, events, etc.)

The goal of this week is to get set up with some of the basic accounts and tools we'll be using (and to grab your first plate of goodies from the buffet).

Tasks:

Go to gmail.com and Create a gmail account if you don't already have one. (this ID might be used for public posting. If you want to remain anonymous online, please choose a pseudonym - don't use your real name as an ID)
We will go over the Tips & Tricks page together. If you have any questions, take another look.
Complete the PUFS TTP CALL Entrance Survey
Go to the Google Docs Page and attempt the tasks.
We will create your blog together, step by step. There's additional information on the Blogger Intro Page. Check that out and experiment if you wish. If time permits, create your first post - 'reflections on my first week of TTP'.
Register for an account at EnglishCentral.com
If you finish all of the above, go to the Websites page and
explore some of the CALL related websites.

Go to Gmail.com
Click 'Create an account'
Enter your first name and last name ( is fine)
Choose your 'Desired Login Name'. Only English letters and numbers can be used. There are more than 200,000,000 gmail accounts, so you probably will need to be a little creative. Click 'check availabilty' before proceeding. If your desired login is not available, choose another (you can choose from the suggestion list or retype your own). When you have succesfully chose your login name, WRITE IT DOWN! REMEMBER IT! This is your main google ID.
Choose a password and enter it twice. WRITE IT DOWN. REMEMBER IT!
Choose a Security question and write an answer you can remember.
For 'Recovery Email' enter your existing email address (yourID@naver.com, @hanmail.net, etc.)
Carefully enter the Word Verification letters.
Click 'I accept. Create my account' at the bottom of the page.
> If you see the same page again, something went wrong. Look for a message in red - that will tell which part of the application has a problem.
> If you see a page that says 'Congratulation!', click 'Show me my account.

To forward all of yourgmail to another email address (like hanmail or naver), click the gearsetting and 'Mail settings.

Then click 'Forwardingand Pop/IMAP'. Enter the email address you want email forwarded to andclick 'Send email verification instructions.

You will receive an emailat the forwarding address. Click on the link in that email. Then go back to your gmail settings. Check 'Forward a copy ofincoming mail to' select the forwarding address and 'Add a forwardingaddress'.

Google Photos (Picasa)

Google's photo hostingservice is called Picasa. They offer 1GB of free space and make it easyto share and embed photos on your blog.

To get started, go toyour gmail and click 'photos' or godirectly to: https://picasaweb.google.com/

Toupload photos to your web albums, click 'upload'.
You DON'T need to click 'Launch Picasa'.

The first time you access Picasa, you might be asked ot create a GoogleProfile. If so, click 'Yes, Create my Google Profile'

Toupload photos, click 'Choose photos to upload'.

Entera name for the album where it says 'Title'.
Select 'Public on the web' and click continue.

Locateand hightlight all of the photos you want ot upload. Then click 'OK'.

Oncethe photos are uploaded, you can make changes by clicking 'Orgazne& Reorder'

Toembed the slideshow of photos on a blog, click 'embed slideshow'

Select the slideshow size, copy the code and paste it into yoru blogpost

Publishing a Video on YouTube

First, sign in at Youtube.com with you Gmail ID.

*** In some countries (like Korea) it will be necessary to go to the bottom of the YouTube page and select
Location: Worldwide
in order to upload videos.

Then Click 'Upload'

There are two ways to publish videos on YouTube - upload a video file or record from your webcam.

If you choose 'upload video', you can upload any of these file types:
.mpg, .mov, .wmv, .flv, .avi, mp4
Files can be up to 2GB in size, but must be less than 10 minutes. in length.
After you chosen the file to upload, you'll see a window like the one below.
Enter information about Title, Description, tags, and category. You can also select your privacy settings.
Then click 'save changes' and you're done.

If you choose to record from a webcam, you'll see a window like this. Click 'allow'.

When you see this window choose your video device and audio device. You should see your video in the video window and audio volume meter movement on the side. When you're ready, click 'ready to record'.

When you're done, click the red square at the bottom.

After that, you can preview (watch what you just recorded), re-record (if you're not satisfied and you want to do it again), or publish.

Once you've published, you can click My Videos (upper right part of your screen) to see what you've published so far.

Then click edit to make any changes to the title and description of your videos.

Congratulations ~ You are now a YouTube Star!

Most of you probably already know how to createPowerpoint presentations. In case you don't there are some guides below.
This skills page will focus more on how to find,publish, and share useful presentations.

Firstly, it's worth nothing that Powerpoint is not the only option forcreating presentations and whereas Powerpoint costs hundreds of dollarsto legally purchase, some other optoins are free.

Google Docs - free to use with your gmailaccount. Much simpler and less sophisticated than Powerpoint, but makesit very easy to collaborate and publish online.You can upload save fileas a ppt or pdf for offline usage and also upload ppt files you'realready created with Powerpoint. (GooglePresentation Guide here)
Impress -is part of the OpenOfficepackagewhich is free and includes alternatives for MS Word and Excel as well.It's very similar to Powrpoint, but a bit simpler to use andlesssophisticated in its options.
Prezi is also a cool new way to create presentations and publish them online if you wish.
You can link to any of these presentations or embed them on your website. Some presentations from Prezi, Slideshare and Authorstream can also be downloaded, but you'll need to create an account with each in order to do so. Presentations made with Google Docs can also be downloaded, but there is no directory listing the Google Presentations. People just post them on their own sites.

There are also a number of sites that allow people to uploadtheir presentations so that other people can view (and sometimesdownload) them. Some of these are:

Slideshare - largest collection of online presentations.Also includes 'slidecasts',audio narraated presendations
Authorstream- also includes the option for users to include audio narration
Voicethread - includes the option for viewers to respond to presentations with text, audio or video.

How to embed presentations on your blog

On the presentation page (Slideshare or other site), click 'embed' and copy the code. Customize if you wish.

Create a new post on your blog. Give it a title. Click 'edit html'. Paste the code, label appropriately.

First,log in to your Slideshare or Authorstream account.
When users publish presentations, they have the choice of making itavailable for download or not. If a presentation is downloadable,you'll be able to click on the download link. You can alsoselect the download option when searching for content, so that you'llonly see downloadable presentations.

When you find one you'dlike to download, you should see a 'download' link at the topof the presentation.
Click that and save thefile.

Creating & Publishing a Google Presentation

Another new window will open. This is your google presentation. To create and edit new slides, use the top menu or RIGHT click on slides.

You can export your presentation as a PDF or Powerpoint file so that you can use it without an internet connection. Click File/Download as/ and choose your desired file type.

You can also publish this online others can see it. To do so, on the top left part of the screen, click 'Share/Publish/embed'.

Click 'Publish Document'.

You will then see web address (URL) that you can use to link to your presentation and some code that you can use to embed it on another site. (stay tuned for some more specific instructions on how to do so).

Google reader allows youto view an unlimited number of blogs (or any sites with an RSS feed) on one page.

To access Google Reader,go to reader.google.com or click on 'reader' from yourgmail.

To subscribe to aspecific blog, click 'add a subscription', paste the address of theblog and 'Add'.

You can subscribeto multiple blogs at one time by importing an .opml file. To do so, click the gear and Reader settings.

Click import/export. I have created an opml file with all TTP blogs, as well ascategories for EFL Blogs, Bloggers in Korea, & General Tech. Save this file by RIGHT clicking/save link as

You can register for a skype account thereand download theskype program here

In your skype window,click the 'contact' tab to see all of your contacts. The'recent' tab will show all of your recent chats.
To add a new contact,type their name or ID into the skype search window.

You can adjust setting (includingyour mic and headset) by clicking Tools/Options.

Any time you see a contact, youcan RIGHT click and call that person, send IM (text chat), send avoicemail or a file.

Once it is installed, youwill see a blue 'd' in the upper right cornerof your browser. Any time you want to bookmark a page, you can clickbook mark. If you'd like to highlight part of the page orcreate a sticky note, click those. You can also share this link viatwitter, facebook, email, and/or create an annotated link.

Diigo Groups allow you to join other groups of peopleinterested in the same kinds of sites as you. You can chooseto keep bookmarks 'private' if you wish.
Go to the LearningCALL group page andclick'jointhis group'.

Message to owner is optional and you can choose how often you want toreceive email notifications of new links to the group (you can changethis later).

Once you've joined a group, when you bookmark a site, you can share youbookmarks more one or more of them when you click bookmark. Using relevant one word will help you organize your linkslater.

UsingPBWorks

PBWorks.com allows you tocreate a typeof website called a 'wiki'. This can be a useful way to create awebsite, especially when collaborating with others. They also allow youto upload files (including Hot Potatoes activies and audio files) in away that others can access directly.

To get started, follow the instructions below.

Go to https://my.pbworks.com/?p=createand fill out the basic information

Check your amil and click on the link including in the email.

You will be taken to a page that includes...

Click on 'Create a workspace'.

Find Basic/Free at the bottom of the page and click 'select'.

Choose the address for your wiki. Select 'For Education' and check 'Iagree...'. Then click 'next'.

Allow anyone to view your workspace, check 'I agree...' and Take me tomy workspace.

You can then 'create a page', upload files, 'edit' the page, or use thenavigation to see default pages or pages that you created.

When you click upload files, you'll see a list of files you're alreadyuploaded.

Clickon one of those files and then click the 'Download' tab.

You will be able to see your page, and copy the URL to post it to yourblog.

To edit the audio, click the 'selection tool

highlight andthen the delete button on your keyboard. You can use the magnifyingglass to zoom in or zoom out. To remove a track, click the'x' and start again.

Saving a file asan mp3
To do so, click 'File/Export'

Save as file type 'mp3'.

When the edit metadata window pops up, you can enter information orignore it. (meta data is the info you would see on your mp3 player whenlistening to this file).

In the save as window, options allows you to change the bit rate(quality of the file - bigger=larger file, higher quality). 64kbsshould be fine. Click 'save'.

To post the html file online, go to http://jefflebow.net/ttp-files
Log in with the class ID and password.
Attach the html file and save.

To post in on your blog, RIGHT click the html file and 'copy link location'.
Then copy that URL into this code

TTP CALL Week#1

The goal of this week is to get set up with some of the basic accounts and tools we'll be using (and to grab your first plate of goodies from the buffet).
Tasks:

Go to gmail.com and Create a gmail account if you don't already have one. (this ID might be used for public posting. If you want to remain anonymous online, please choose a pseudonym - don't use your real name as an ID)
Complete the PUFS TTP CALL Entrance Survey
Go to the Google Docs Page and attempt the 'Basic Task'. (creating a google doc) Title the Google Doc 'your-name's portfolio'. Share it with pufslebow@gmail.com
Go to the Blogger Intro Page, watch the screencasts if you want. Then go to blogger.com and set up a blog and create a short first post. The topic of this post can be 'reflections on my first week of TTP'. Attempt extension activities if you like.
If you finish all of the above, go to the Websites page and explore some of the CALL related websites.

JQuiz.The first stage is to enter the questions and answers for yourexercise. First, start the JQuizprogram. You should see an interface like the one below.

Look at the picture below, and type in the information:

Type the title in the title box.
Type the question in the question box.
Makesure that "Multiple-choice" is selected in the drop-down list box tothe right of the question. This defines the type of question you wantto make.
Type the answers in the boxes on the left, and thefeedback on the right. Note that each answer, right or wrong, has itsown feedback.
Check the "Correct" checkbox next to answer B.

To add another question, click the up arrow next to Q 1

To save the JQuiz, so you can edit it later, click File

To save the quiz as an html page, click File/Create Web Page/StandardFormat

JClozeis used to make gap-fill or cloze exercises. The idea of agap-fill exercise is that the student completes all the answers beforechecking; in other words, it's a holistic exercise. When all theanswers have been entered, the student presses the Checkbutton to mark the answers. Correct answers will be inserted into thetext; any incorrect answers will be left in textboxes, so that they canbe corrected. When the student checks an answer that is not completelycorrect, a penalty is incurred, so the score depends on the number ofchecks required before the answer is completely correct.

In a JCloze exercise, you can include a Hintbutton which will give the student one free letter of the answer he orshe is currently working on (based on where the cursor is). You canalso include a specific clue for each gap. Using the Hintor Clue buttons.

JMatchis used to create matching exercises. Basically, this means thata list of items appears on one side, and each one must be matched up toan item on the other side.

The bookmarks bar in any browser can help you get to your favoritesites much more quickly.
To use the bookmark bar in Chrome,
First make sure you seethe bar by clicking the wrench icon on the upper right. Thenclick 'Tools' / 'Always show bookmarks bar'.

then, when you are on a website you'd like to add to your bookmarksbar, click the yellow star in the upper right, select Bookmarks bar,and 'Done'.

You can edit you bookmark any time by RIGHT clicking it and choosing'edit'.

Bandwidth

Blog

Browser

Bytes/ KB / MB / GB / TB

clipboard

Copy

Cut

Desktop

Folder

Quicklaunch

Refresh

refresh (or reload) a webpagein order to see any updates made to that page.

Remix

To remix contentisto take elements of two or more media files and mash them together tocreate a new piece of media. Often, these are called mash-ups.

Resolution

Resolution isa measureof graphics that's used to describe what a printer can print, a scannercan scan, and a monitor can display. In printers and scanners,resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi)--the number of pixels adevice can fit in an inch of space. A monitor's resolution refers tothe number of pixels in the whole image. Common resolutions include 800by 600, 1,024 by 768, and 1,280 by 1,024.

RootDirectory

The top of a directory hierarchy. OnWindows machines, this usually c:\ All other directories (or folders)are contained within the root directory oritssub-directories.

RSS

Really Simple Syndication - a formatthat lets readers stay current with blogs and news content using a feedreader,or aggregator.Blogs, podcasts and videoblogs contain an RSS feed,whichlets users subscribe to content automatically and read or listen to thematerial on a computer or a portable device. screensaver

An application that displays images(usually moving in some way) on the screen of the user when thecomputer is not in use. Can be configured in Windows by going toControl Panel/Display / Screen Saver

SystemConfiguration Utility

Web2.0

Wiki

WYSIWYG

WYSIWYG is anacronym for 'What You See Is What You Get', meaning that how somethinglooks on the screen when editing is how it will look when editing isfinished.

Tips & Tricks

If you are having trouble connecting to the internet, click on the icon, select PUFS Lab 4F or PUFS Lab4F-1 and click connect. If you see this icon: then you are connected.
If you don't have a bookmark or link to a site, typethe URL directly into the address bar. You don't ever need totype http:// and usually you don't need www. You also don'tneed to delete what's there - just click (automatic highlight) andtype.
When using Chrome, you can search by typing terms directlyin the address bar. Google search shortcuts here. (time define weather sunset convert)
Trouble reading the letters? Ust ctrl+ or ctrl-to make text larger or smaller.
Use tabbed browsing Chrome MSIE Firefox, IE8
Whenin doubt, right click. This will usually give a set ofoptions for what you want to do.
For example, when you see a link that you want to open, but don't wantto lose the page you're on, right click, 'open link in newtab'.
Made a mistake? Deleted something by accident? ctrl+z (undo) Most programs allow you to 'undo' a number of your previous steps.
Learn general functions, not specific places to click.

Blogger basics

Creating a Blogger Blog

Go to Blogger.com and sign in with your gmail ID and password. This is the first screen you'll see.

Click 'continue' and set your language to 'English'.

Click 'Create Your Blog Now'

Choose any blog title you wish (it can be simple like Jeff'sTTP Blog')
The Blog address will be more challenging. You need to checkavailability for any address you choose. No spaces allowed.

When you have found one, click 'create blog' and you'll see thispage. Click which template looks nicest to you. This can be changedlater.

Click 'Start Blogging'

Your Dashboard
Your dashboard is were you can control all aspects of youblog. To get there click the orange B in the upper left corner ofyourscreen.

Creating Posts / Creating Pages
Most of the time, when you create content on your blog, you willcreatea 'post by clicking 'New Post' at the upper right corner of yourblogpage or on your Dashbaord.

Blogger 'Pages' are used to create things likean Aboutpage or a Contact mepage. Pages are usually shown on the top menu, but do notappear on the main page stream of content. Blogger's Page guide is here. In the screenshot below. 'About', Resources, Skills, etc .are'pages'.

To create a page, click 'Edit Posts' (confusing, I know).

Enter your title and body and 'Publish Page'.

Create 'New Post' and choose the 'Componse' tab. Then clickthe Image icon.

Once the photo has been loaded if you mouse over it, you can selectthesite, orientation (left center right), add a caption, or remove it.

Posting a YouTube video on your blog

Go to YouTube.com. Find a video you'd like to post. Beneath the video, click 'share' and then 'more'.

Click the blogger icon

Another window will pop up with either some code or a screenshot of the selected video. Either way, click 'Publish Post'. That's it.

From your BloggerDashboard, click Design

Make sure your on the'Page Elements' Tab

Click 'Add a Gadget' onthe side bar

Look through thedifferent categories, select gadgets of interest

Adjust settings ifdeisred. Then Click 'Save'.

Click Save again in theupper right.

Another new window will open.This is your google presentation. To create and edit newslides, use the top menu or RIGHT click on slides.

You can export your presentationas a PDF or Powerpoint file so that you can use it without an internetconnection. Click File/Download as/ and choose your desiredfile type.

You can alsopublish this online others can see it. To do so, on the topleft part of the screen, click 'Share/Publish/embed'.

Click 'PublishDocument'.

You will thensee web address (URL) that you can use to link to your presentation andsome code that you can use to embed it on another site. (stay tuned forsome more specific instructions on how to do so).

Create a Google Document. Title it 'Class# - Joe's Short Introduction'. (Use your name instead of Joe's).
In this document, write three interesting sentences introducing yourself. Try to include something beyond just basic 'biodata'.

Go to you main Docs page. docs.google.com
You should see a spreadsheet entitled 'Fall 2011 Class# MegaContact Page'
Open that spreadsheet and add the URL of your blog on the appropriate line.

Log in to your gmail and click 'Documents'.

Click Create new/Document

To change the Title, click 'Untitled' next to Google docs. A Window should pop up where you can enter the new title. Click OK.

If you want to save a copy of this documen to your computer, click File/Download as/ and choose the file type you'd like to save it as.

If you'd like to share this document with other people, click 'Share/Sharing Settings'.

A 'Share with others' window will pop-up. Enter the email address of the person(s) you'd like to share the document with. You can choose to allow them to edit the document or just view it. To share a document with Jeff, enter 'pufslebow@gmail.com' and please allow me to edit the document so I can make comments. Then click Share.
